Press Release:
Aggression Ended, but Roots Still There
August 8, 2022; 12:00 PM
After three days of barbaric aggression on the Gaza Strip, mediation efforts came to fruition, and a ceasefire was reached. However, the aggression only stopped after it left 44 people dead, including 15 children and 4 women, and more than 360 wounded. It also caused the destruction of 18 housing units and inflicted damage on 1,675 units.
The aggression might have ended, but there’s still a need for collective efforts by all international organizations and government donors to address the aggression impacts, i.e., the reconstruction of destroyed houses, the rehabilitation of damaged infrastructure, and the provision of critically-needed supplies in the health sector to deal with the large number of injuries as well as the compensation of the affected people for their lost houses and belongings.
Even this is far from enough, as the international community should exert double efforts to address the root causes of the repeated aggression. According to a recently-issued UN report, the occupation, Gaza blockade, and the apartheid regime are the most important sources of destabilization in the region.
We would like also to bring the attention of the world that the occupation has launched this aggression unprovoked and targeted civilian housing and infrastructure. In this regard, we demand a thorough and swift investigation by relevant rights groups into these crimes and hold the occupation accountable for its actions.
The time has come to give the Palestinian people their right to self-determination and build their independent state, with Jerusalem as its capital.
